Professor Will Steffen is an Earth System scientist at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra and is a Councillor with the Climate Council of Australia. He is a lead author of the planetary boundaries work, which identifies the Earth System processes and biophysical thresholds which if crossed could threaten the “safe operating space” for humanity.
Professor Steffen has served as the Science Adviser to the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency. From 1998 to 2004, he served as Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, an international network of scientists studying global environmental change based in Stockholm, Sweden. Professor Steffen is honorary professor at the Copenhagen University’s Department of Geography and Geology and a Senior Research Fellow at the Stockholm Resilience Centre.
