GLOBAL AGRIBUSINESS ALLIANCE

Developing the global agribusiness alliance to drive SDG impacts at scale

Context

The Global Agribusiness Alliance (GAA) is an international, CEO-led, private sector platform of supply-side companies, committed to harnessing their collective strengths to tackle shared environmental, social and sustainability challenges. It is hosted by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)

As the food and land-use systems transformation agenda take center stage it is critical for the agribusiness supply-side sector to scale its contribution to developing and delivering sustainable solutions. Critically, global agri-businesses individually and collectively through a platform such as GAA, must embed the pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the heart of global production and business models.

Our work

Earth Security Group worked closely with the Global Agri-business Alliance (GAA) its corporate members and WBCSD, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).

It provided GAA with a series of strategic pathways to align with key food policy and sustainable land use frameworks developed by governments: The Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems, developed by the Committee on World Food Security, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Strategic outputs included:

  • Keynote presentation by Alejandro Litovsky, ESG's CEO at the launch of the Global Agri-business Alliance (GAA) in Singapore in 2016 -- at the Building Sustainable Futures Forum organised by Olam International [Video below]
  • A CEO briefing in collaboration with GAA and WBCSD providing CEOs an implementation plan to embed CFS-RAI and SDGs in their business model development and impact assessments -- highlighting key areas for better collaboration including youth participation in agriculture and formalisation of land tenure security at scale.
  • Business strategy workshops with agribusiness companies conducted in collaboration with GAA and WBCSD to discuss the strategic implications and recommendations.

“Earth Security Group provides a strategic framework for agri-businesses to invest in areas of sustainable growth, backed by a series of innovative business models and cross-sector cooperation opportunities. Their translation of CFS-RAI principles and SDG targets into a business implementation framework will help the sector’s continuous improvement in impact measurement and strategic cross-sector collaboration.”
